It is soon time for Doinky's annual mid-year break!

New in the shop!

"An Assault on Affection"
by Jon Chan.
"An Assault on Affection", is a comic/tale partly inspired by the artist's experience of a break-up; and the realization of his (the main character's) struggle to love with HEART; thus confusing the idea of love, and love itself.
More of Jon Chan's works over here.
Available now at the Doinky Hut!

The sewing workshop experience

Sometime around October or November last year, a friend F brought along her pal to the shop. We got to talking, and she (the friend) asked if I conduct sewing classes. I gave my usual 'no' and rattled on a list of much repeated excuses. "I'm bloody impatient." "I think I don't have a teacher-ish quality, whatever THAT is." The gist of it is: I think I stink at teaching and that's the end of it. I was VERY struck by her honesty when she replied that I shouldn't let these doubts stop me from trying. I got home that night, thinking about what she had told me. 3 a.m and I'm still not sleeping. My mind was now fired up. I'm thinking "What would be fun enough for me to want to do this?"

I got up and sketch out the workshop room (pictured below), and what sort of classes I would like. When that is done, I realized she had freed me from those doubts. And for that, I'm always very grateful.

Since then, I have conducted a couple of classes. And while I hadn't had the mind to take a picture of the students' works, I will show you these 2 that I've managed to remember to take a pictures of:-)C signed up for a Coin-Pouch workshop. While this wasn't the piece she had created during our session together, I was very moved when she showed me another coin pouch she had made after the sewing workshop. She took some fabric scraps from home and made this awesome piece. I particularly like the back of her new coin pouch that featured a flower field and that happy caterpillar at the corner. And here is a snapshot of S's chubby housefly. After 1 and a half hours, she sure was looking forward to drawing the housefly's facial expression. I thought it was hilarious she gave it double-eye bags and that someone-stunned-me mouth. Plus she gave me some good ideas for students having trouble threading a needle. I shall be on the lookout for Wax. Ear wax that is! Kidding. And THAT is how the Sewing Workshop came together. With a couple of chairs donated by a friend who moved away; my bad paintings converted into tables; tons of fabric scraps collected for the students...and it's been real swell, and I look forward to coming up with more kooky things-to-make for future workshops:-)

Sew a Banana Slug Workshop

Bug of the Month (August): Banana Slug!
This blobby creature sure has one funny name! You will learn to use a cotton tee to construct the slug's body; use rims of a tee to form its skirt (slug-version for legs!); and you will also to learn to embroider spots on its body. You can choose to put yellow spots (as depicted in the sample) OR you can opt for brown spots as some banana slugs DO have brown spots, making them resemble an over-riped banana!
